Defining the Poetic

There is this moment
in sharing intimate writing
where the dance practice
allows us to look for a moment
into the eyes of the athlete
and see in the muscle structure
the psychology of the mood
the terminus of the stretch
the confidence that lingers
the expressiveness
of every syllable of meaning

and it is in that millisecond
under the lights
holding the pose
and seeing for the first time
the sense that awkwardness
is no longer on the table
and the dance is one
allowing us to be ourselves
and doing it in front of another

that a certain unattainable nakedness
appears like a distant flash
that somewhere struck the ground
and split a tree
and caused an irreparable damage
to an old idea
that who we are
is so inconceivably alone

because our words
have crossed between
the life of someone
who is nothing
and someone
who is all there is.

And that to me
is poetry.
