The Candy Dish
the candy dish with the missing lid
a treasure chest for all of the kids
sometimes filled with candy sticks
but never full of licorice
I wonder what happened to the missing lid
the one that goes on that dish
I wonder if its lost or hid
or if someone has broken it
around certain times of the year
the dish is filled with christmas cheer
at other times it would appear
that the easter bunny has been here
in the fall at halloween
the dish is full of ghosts and things
chocolate treats and spider rings
gummy worms and vampire teeth
on the table where it sits

In its style and metre, and for sweet (in more than one sense) beauty, reminded me so closely of A.E. Housman's poem "Loveliest of trees the cherry now", set in my home county Shropshire.
