Reality and Religion

What can be placed in the palm of our hands?
is it all fate or a road we can plan?
are we marching to one of two gates
is the direction certain, is a change too late?

In fact do the two places commonly proscribed even exist?
will an angel or demon seal our fates with a kiss?
so many want to believe heaven is real
but to get there what will be the deal

Or is the thinking that a deal is even required wrong
does dealing and wheeling mean the heart is gone
how many times do we hear a parent say
"spare my child and any cost I will pay"

Absorbed some amongst us with our position is space
even more problematic is the search for a creator's place
that "search for perfection is all very well
but to look for heaven is to live here in hell"

Even Joseph Campbell, who I admire so well
left a few things unexplained in his tales
the notion of bliss does it automatically lead to good
doesn't bliss have a dark side like anything could?

I am not about to answer for you
that work is yours alone
but just remember in case you have to atone

Even a kind heart isn't immune to great pains
but can enjoy the sun and the rain
and take other's shortfalls without responding the same
seems to me that light is where we want to remain
