Painted turtles
rest on the
rocks
no fear of the
big old
crocks
when they need
to hide they
tuck inside
staying very
alert and
wide eyed
such a pretty
thing it's colors
are bright
not to be fooled
because it
will bite

There are both the Eastern and Western varieties of the picta....both are exquisitely colored with map like features...
I've handled both and had a picta picta for 2 years...feeding him mainly tadpoles...and he was voracious....What a beautiful subject for a poem...nice.

I wouldn't color my pet's ...that's just silly!
I paint on rocks!I go "rock picking " and just paint different animals on them!I found a rock once that was in the exact shape of the Grinch's face...so that's what I painted on it!

Difficult to tell they were painted stones, the last verse threw me. (Heard of snapping turtles.)

Oh those little bastards bite....as for snapping turtles, I'm not about to pick one of those up and bring it home..no thanks!
