Behind the shields

My invisible shield
it's all you will see
ice cold and hard
never to be prised free
Shamefully grown
from painful milestones
of my past

Pressed behind the shields
of my very own mask

All my raw feelings
are kept from the light
forced into shadows
locked up safe and tight
hidden away
never to display
all my fears

Pressed behind my shields
and drowned with my tears

Now i grow old
all i know is this mask
a horrid defence
thats grown more than i asked
and what was lost
has never had the chance to be
