The Intruder

(a commentary on my previous submission- Incubus-Succubus)

The subconscious has invaded my writing
Sidling in while I fussed with feet and meter,
Its stealthy intrusion noticed much too late.
How I envy Coleridge and Huxley
Whose invaders were welcomed so warmly
That assault was unsurreptitious.

The uncommon yet quite unremarkable
Subject of post-coital hallucination
Was simple enough to rend in verse form
Yet the outcome, on my first reading, was
Quite flawed. Infected by some unknown virus,
It had become an unwitting allegory.

A good sexual climax symbolised
Unconditional love and commitment
And the concomitant defencelessness
Brought fears of betrayal and rejection-
The hallucinatory succubus.
The incubus was doubts shared even more
Intensely by the dearest beloved.

The declared love for the succubus,
Hoping for the same love for the incubus
Was a plea for reconciliation
And mutual acceptance of weakness
And unavoidable human imperfection.

I never wanted to write about these things
It was the intruder. I want back control.
