Beneath the Surface

 
Take your dreams and drown them
in forced laughter and empty smiles.
 
Fill the bleeding hole with gauze and trinkets
and flimsy aspirations.
 
Don't glance behind
at what it makes no sense to want,
and please don't speak of the heartbreak.
 
Keep the rhythm.
Keep the pretense.
Don't let the cracks show.
 
With dreams never to see the light of day,
left in the darkness beyond the glassy surface
reflecting every fear and reason not to reach it
 
You can be happy.
 
You might forget.  
 
 

but please, if you don't wish to see the pain,
leave me to mourn what I try so hard  
to hold beneath the surface
