POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Two of the cats i live with piss in my shoes. My wife either doesn't, or her piss smells like the second cat's.
< adultery >
your breasts
were just the right size
just the right brown
for the light
one window away
balanced between
the two parts of the day
and our love
innocent
but only to us
and they
could always
be waiting outside
but not in this room
where two months rent
was more than enough
for eternal love
for your breasts
so warm in my hands
your breasts ...

Cheryl Wilkins
written across a box
in my attic
and in it a picture
of the 83 Camaro she loved
but nothing
about when
she took it to get groceries
about when
she stopped at that light
and the Ford pickup
its driver
drunk from one of those
long Texas roads
and nothing
about her three girls
or that second husband of hers
she never got along with
and who wasn't...

< dog woke me up >
but all i could think of
was the gasoline
and that picture
that kid
and the napalm
and i said i would
but first
my car needs gas
and i went out to the car
and got in
and started it
and drove to the gas station
and there they were
pouring it over her
and there i was
helping
i had the matches in my hand
and was reaching down
when the dog woke me up ...

< blood >
i'm trying to get beyond
the necessity
of its flow
trying to leave
its constant run
and linger on the
red
my closed eye
sees
when looking
at the sun

< folding paper >
my hands
(old hands)
creasing
(and creased themselves)
creasing this bright paper
yesterday
a heron
today
a rose
creasing
the movement of a hand
the movement of my hands
their rhythm
as they move together
each knowing
where the other
is
and crease down
and fold out
and crease
and fold
and fold again
my hands
(old hands)
persuade the paper
yesterday
a heron
today ...

< finally >
my dad
has no one to speak to
death is that way
for all of us
though we cannot admit it now
(even though we say we can)
all of us
will finally
have no one to speak to
has no one to speak to
death is that way
for all of us
though we cannot admit it now
(even though we say we can)
all of us
will finally
have no one to speak to

< all of you from a home long past >
philip
glances at his watch
leaving on the nine o-clock
barely a chance
but if he ran
susan
was running for the gate
all that wool skirt
catching up to do
tripping on
most of it
ray
is waiting to be eaten
out in a world
missing food
jennifer
though spring catches her
feels
the first frost anyway
pat
knows something
but
she's not telling
alex
stands flat ...

< immortality >
the faces in the picture
the grasp of each finger
taken from that very instant
as two hands
joined together in
some promise of 1948
now rests in my hand
saved by some dead child
of some dead mother
and i put it down
and lead my heart
to the next box
the next tomb
the voices of silence
they come together
in the midst of this clutter
of old gifts and promises
waiting here
waiting for no one

< her dreaming of the dance >
to dance
to dance the flurry of the stage again
to dance away the night
the darkness of the night
and of the future
that has come
her eyes
they're off again
this old girl sits
her bottle never far away
below her hand
beside the chair
beside the chair it sits
it helps
with dreams
with dreaming of the dance
her journey to the crown
the crown
the flurry of the stage again
to dance
to dance this dark away
to dance away the one who took
who took away the dance
the one who's...

< cut like a movie >
as if a picture of my hand
taken in Texas in 1993
(on the causeway to Galveston)
could reach out
and open a door to the east coast
just wide enough
to shout through
shout anything
that might bring you back
"we're all pieces now"
(i want to tell you)
gray, white, black
i spend afternoons
cutting them
like a movie
and in the evening
i spread them out
our pages ...

< ornament >
a light rain
a red berry
one of all these
all waiting
in the overcast
a slight drizzle
a fall day
and on each one
and this one too
a drop
a tiny mirror
stuck to its bottom
that wraps the sky
the forest
the field
the dog and me
all of us
it has all of us
stuck to its bottom
a silver ornament...
