POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Thought and feeling
I was you in my beginning.
Adventure, risk, rebellion
Filled me with belief
Now gone.
Was I crushed
Or prostrated myself
Legs in the air?
Pungent liquids
Washed away
Explanation.
Now you’ve come,
Each moment
Is treasured for itself.
Your Heraclitus
Drowns my Parmenides.
I theorise, analyse,
You express.
I think by routine
You feel in the moment.
Do I guide and support
Or parasite on your vivacity?
Are you what I might have been?
Might still be?
Adventure, risk, rebellion
Filled me with belief
Now gone.
Was I crushed
Or prostrated myself
Legs in the air?
Pungent liquids
Washed away
Explanation.
Now you’ve come,

You feel in the moment.

Aging sonnet
Why to me is your favour presented
To aging flesh and a wilting ardour
With further shrivelling anticipated
When your vitality has all to gather?
My wants are not of boyish inception
Though the pumping heart and the longing thought
Differ little from those of younger passion.
Yet fulfilment from another source is sought.
Not the thrill of bodily integration,
But words of fun and surprise and candour,
Of beauty and intimate revelation
Which give you that incomparable allure.
There is a separation I foresee
You are a much...

Dark Youth
I welcomed the dark of winter nights,
Liberation from childhood fears,
Adults cocooned indoors.
Censure stalled
In the haven
Of unlit streets.
Complexions changed
From summer’s pasty putty
To the lucence of marble.
Eyes deepened in sockets and meaning.
Blackness was the refuge
For first embraces
And tentative kisses.
In age, light is life
Darkness but danger
And premonition.
The promise of thrilling nights
Is beyond recovery.

Adults cocooned indoors.

Fun piece 4. Work??
Open the big doors for fork lift trucks
Bringing massive tins of tomato pulp
To top up steaming vats of ketchup.
Then close the doors to keep the flies out.
But the flies flew in with the trucks
To give more zest to the ketchup.
My protest was seen as trouble-making
So they followed the normal procedures
And promoted me to vegetable soup.
Open empty cans on a moving belt,
Before being filled with soup, I had to
Place five peas in every passing tin.
They knew I was about to enter university

Emerald on Dover cliff top.
Rock pools of winkles and anenomes,
Seaweed- dirty brown to feathery green.
Small places for a tiny person
Complete.
Then sand as on Dover beach
Between threatening sea and pure sheer cliff.
I scrambled to the top
To conquer a landscape beyond.
And so to opportunity unlimited
Beyond the dangerous waves.
A continent and greater world
Called seductively to me.
Ancient Britons would have known
The new view that was presented
Lay upon a slippery curvature
And not a deceptively flat earth. ...

Fun piece 3. a,b,c,........ x,y,z.
A baleful coincidence did emerge
From gruesome hallucinations.
I joked knowingly, lugubriously,
Mindful, nonetheless
Of pertinent quotations.
Rhymes suspiciously tainted,
Uncensored, vicariously,
Would, xenophobically,
Yield zeugmas

Fun piece 2. Nonsense Verse
The crocodile and giraffe, they'd remark
Met on a hill with the flood all around.
While the croc did sun, thinking what a lark
The giraffe stretched for leaves to be found
On those few trees above the water mark
Amusing the croc for whom fish did abound.
The lady crocodile and gentlemen giraffe
Enjoyed the company fate had bestowed.
At each other's eating habits both could laugh.
Humour put them on the romantic road.
You think croc and giraffe mating is naff?
Wrong. Their mutual passion did explode.
On what...

Fun piece 1. Polygamous Sestina
Pedro rejoiced in his heterogenous taste.
Five women in a week with two days for philosophy.
If each offered a different way to be raunchy
They could revitalise his faltering lust.
With time in the clouds, what a sublime variety
Never to be found in the prison of monogamous love.
Phoebe was his Venus- a virginal aesthetic love.
Her body's beauty showed him to be a man of taste.
But she craved admiration without variety.
Eroticism strangled by her Calvinist philosophy
With resignation, she tolerated contemptible male lust. ...

The Peckham fox and the urban community
An old dog fox was at the grassy edge
When I sat down upon the back door step
To smoke my last cigarette of the night.
'Stay on the grass. Keep off the flower beds'
I commanded both by voice and gesture.
He sourly acknowledged the boundaries,
Asserting his territorial rights
By lifting his leg on as much green
As he, erratically, could cover.
It was a strain- the urinary flow
Was thin and shallowly intermittent.
'You've got prostate problems- they come with age'
I laughed. With annoyance and defiance ...

Impossible Intimacy
The intimacy of lovers may rest
On their shared ideals, tastes and interests.
The sexual may complete a spectrum
That still can shine with one faded colour.
Erotic closeness of opposites thrills
Like a tightrope walker without a net.
'You ready now?- with a slight twist of her head
Towards the bedroom as carelessly
As switching on a household appliance.
It was a warm and sunny afternoon,
So perfect for a love making enhanced
By what all five senses could bring.
Such a change from an hour berating me

Nature Reclaims
What is true nature in those places and
Sometimes whole countries where it has endured
Control, transformation and destruction
By millenia of human intervention?
Is nature still nature when altered
By manipulation of people like
Their turning of wild wolves into tame dogs?
The saddest yet eerily serene sights
Are of human slash, burn and abandon.
Three great power stations in a line
Each three miles apart in a mimicry
Of medieval cathedrals and castles
Which overlooked the ancient landscape.
