Clams and Virgins
I went for a long walk and thought about a great many things.
I thought about a lot of things but not nearly enough.
Some of us don't have breakdowns.
We go on long walks that take us nowhere.
Some of us listen when we want to be screaming.

and I really want to know what she thinks about,
so I stopped kissing her long
enough to ask her
what she thought about religion.
She told me when she was a child
she talked like a child
thought like a child
and she reasoned like a child
and now that
she was a woman she
put childish things aside.
She said she don't know,
some guy named Paul told her that.
I didn't know Paul
but I didn't ask and I forgot about it because
what she said made sense and we
just kept fucking.

Why?
did I try
so hard all those
years, giving more every
day, staying up late each and every
night, trying to cover the distance created
when one person only is willing to give ten percent
to the other's one-hundred and ninety but ending up only
with tears, tears, tears, and then no more because
there is a limit to how much one can cry ( )

three magical words from
someone who was

I like it when the singers breathe too often and too noticeably because it reminds me that they are alive.
The TVs on either side of the room
were on the same channel
and the same woman was talking on both
only the sound on one television was a few seconds behind
the first. For
as long as I was eating breakfast
there were two of her
and I wonder
if there was enough of a pause between
what the first woman said
and
what the second woman said
for her to hear herself think

maybe I think about you when I'm cold.
I only speak ill of dragons under very specific circumstances:
when I'm alone
in the car with the windows up,
driving on a road
at night (dragons hate the night)
with no other cars in sight
and
if I'm completely certain that they don't exist.
I never speak ill of dragons.

sometimes everything is here, waiting for you to notice it
Sometimes I'm kept awake by awful thoughts and my anxieties.
I just want it to end but the day isn't
finished with me yet.

Sometimes I'm up late
because things are (going) great and
I don't see any reason why I shouldn't stay up with those times.

MISCELLANEOUS POEM

not all damsels have to be in distress
You might have just enough for nothing' said the fisherman
who'd spent his entire day teaching
his young man to fish
to the farm girl
who'd spent her days teaching
her father's cats to catch mice
before she even knew what death was when it was born.
The next day
the fisherman lost his fish and
the girl
no longer tied to the farm due to her meeting with death when it was dead
knew that cats with nothing to protect had
no need to catch new mice all day
not even for sport.
They had nothing to prove anymore
and nothing was just...
