LOVE POEM

Dear John
Mornings come and go
the sting of immunisations and
melancholic mourning breath, held
closer than was comfortable to fight
the tide pulling me to sea
among the many fish.
I am my flesh, my vulnerabilities
I am my weakness and my faults
all you never took me for
all you ignored
Dear John, you cannot make this better.
Nights pass and come,
the ache of beachfront passion
to my temple; my body surely not
anymore. Less resistance from the anchor
in the shallows being dragged out
a rusted, jaded chain.

She's broken, like me
a fragile little marionette
I played with her heartstrings
enough to hear her smile sing
we kissed in an empty schoolyard
elegant apostles leaning awkwardly
no truth in love we dared to tell
our lie was told to spite this hell
and our lie was love. Adolescent one of us
enough to be a secret tryst, our cloak and dagger
toke and drag, her coughing cold
air showed her breathe
and when I held her skin to mine
a whispered "yes" was all it took
for the last shred of innocence to leave

I came home and read my texts from tonight in an unconscious, semi-sobering state
I went through the process of deconstructing the words I said between 8pm and 11 beers.
Conclusion - facile arguments to cope with oneself leave you emptier the further down you go
collectively, I think we sank more than too far to reconcile ourselves with god, or girlfriends.

My reflection stands stark against the icy mirror image of a summer once passed
holding truth in its cheeks, beggs to burst past the seams
tears scream
"this is not forgiveness, this is murder and you're laughing at it"

admittedly it's not well read
critically acclaimed with grains of salt
weary eyes and heavy heads
She calls me icarus - I'm flying low to the forest
she's too taken by bright sparks as flames rise before us

down at the pen and pad
adjusts herself so she can read the words I've scribbled down and
I hand her the paper
she asks me if It's mine

You inhale amber tints of sunrise

To deny my voice the fear of rebuking my head"

Requiem aeternem deo
We break down the pillars
and crumble the alters
that once held our glory so high
out of reach
the marching of progress
and faltering silence
as night closes in but we pierce it with speech
speak
"God is dead and we are the ones who killed him"
so lay your head on these collapsing buildings
there's not much left here, only omnipotence decomposing
in this tomb we call a church.
We are the forsaken, guilt ridden
horses to the stream
No redemption awaits
fill up your blackened lungs and scream
