POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I guess I write poems.
Untitled 2
Do not listen to the words that ooze from administrative lips,
Watch them as they pool into the concrete and slip away into a grate of normality.
Wash them away with your glorious imagination
You cannot be summed up or symbolized by a handful of letters
and a Doctor's note
Do not bind yourself in a straight-jacket of gender roles
Let your leather jacket zip you tight in a ball gown
Your identity doesn't always have to be remedied or medicated
You cannot be defined by a dictionary or measured by
your parents' expectations
Do not...

Dearest Friend,
Please remember to be gentle with yourself.
You are made up of billions of years and your
Molecules match stardust.
Even when you stumble, you are going somewhere.
Don’t be afraid to let your heart break,
Like any muscle, the burn hurts with a certain
Satisfaction—maybe it’s the knowledge that
You’re getting stronger.
Rip your thoughts asunder, darling
Each and every day.
Open your brain so wide, that you think an entire universe might

Going Away to College (A Series of Poems)
Packing
Pack your heart up in a box
Label it “memories” and think
Of a few of your favorite things
Crying
Every tear drop holds a rainbow
If you remember to let light shine
Family
A redwood forest holds trees so big
You think they must touch some kind of heaven
And everything smells like rain
Soaking up the same nutrients
Each growing to be beautiful and different
Going Away to College
It’s just a new set of training wheels
But don’t be afraid of losing a tire along the way...

I do
Till death do us part
the scars on your heart will remain
from when we thought this was destiny
and we made the mistake of sleeping with
someone who was even more insane

Make Me Your Scrapbook
Bind me with yarn
make me a scrapbook
carry all your memories
and mistakes between my pages
Tape pictures of your prom
and scrawl over them with the story
of your very first kiss
and wrinkle my paper
with your tears when you
weep over the very last
Threaten to make me burst
from all the life you have
stuffed inside of me
Let me grow dusty
from disuse
while you make more memories
to look back on in old age
of those crazy times of youth
make me a scrapbook
carry all your memories
and mistakes between my pages
Tape pictures of your prom
and scrawl over them with the story
of your very first kiss
and wrinkle my paper
with your tears when you
weep over the very last
Threaten to make me burst
from all the life you have
stuffed inside of me
Let me grow dusty

Dreams
Eventually,
the magma churning inside
stopped bursting through
it hardened and became
just another mountainside
we all believed it was from pure
stubbornness.

Self Reflection
I hate change. It doesn't make much sense to me to say that, as I'm a pretty fucking adaptable person. So, perhaps I should clarify. I don't mind the world around me changing. Global warming phases me only for its disrespect and lack of dignity, my ideal life is one where I have no permanent address, and the only people I've ever truly felt homesick for are my brothers. I am entirely adaptable. I've had people in my life die and I have never, honestly, gone through the, "I can't believe they're gone" shock. They're dead. It's sucks. Emotional anguish. The end.
I don't do denial....

i miss believing there was Something greater than me,
Something greater than humanity
i miss the assurance of unconditional love
i miss feeling the vibrations of other believers pulsating around me in a crowd of worshipers
i miss knowing that god needed no book or definition
i miss knowing that god was a Feeling,
if Nothing else
i miss the awe that came with learning about the miracles of Jesus
i miss the passion of a doubter's faith
I miss capitalizing something other than me.

Elaborating on The Offspring's song "Want You Bad"
I want to nestle in the darkest corner of your mind,
curl against your side and feel your heart beat with passion and rage
I want to tromp through the woods with you,
chase down transcendental enlightenment while risking poison ivy
I want to start a riot at your peace rally,
so we get thrown in jail and fuck
Let me feel the sandpaper of your callouses
Let me add yours to mine.
curl against your side and feel your heart beat with passion and rage
I want to tromp through the woods with you,
chase down transcendental enlightenment while risking poison ivy
I want to start a riot at your peace rally,

The Proposal

looks down at her shoes

Vignette from 10th Grade
Wake up
Get dressed
Climb in
Drive off.
In the hospital, it's fluorescent bright. Outside in the navy air, the moon still shines white. Inside the hospital, the walls were wide and narrow. Outside the city blared with silence.
Innocence and ignorance don't always protect against the pains of reality and subconscious warnings don't always prepare you for the inevitable.
Wake up, Mom said, your dad's not doing well
Get up, robotic motions
Climb in, suppressed emotions
Drive off, to feel feelings I couldn't quite spell.
I don't even take...

You Are
You are constellations made from fireflies,
Folded pages and underlined phrases
in my favorite book,
You are coffee and cream,
My awakening.
