POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Journal Entry
We can speculate that each individual carries a soul. The theme is repeated in various religions, old and new. I feel as though my own individual experiences have embraced this way of thinking. A stranger out of touch with the place where we began. A bright momentum that illuminates through a barricaded mind, because it is likely we would break. We are fragile, fabricated myths.
I am exploring a warm and familiar taste of nostalgia that sickens the organs. Can we say for certain that the sensitivity of touching can shatter the nerves embedded in our skins?
It can be effortless to...

My (our) Place
world filled big brother
society. depression. figures out of nowhere.
everything grey. nothing sloppy. wiped out. regulated.
the change disappeared.
cut off from original thinking.
‘We live in the past, present, and future.
We listen and dance underground’

full eyes saw you dress. indecency. slit up the side low.
She noticed you looking
Anyone invited was welcome.
so restricted. culture shock. confirmation code
little hidden box.
music. people. dancing. drinking. corner. sing.

An Encounter with a Bum
I saw a bum the other day
it is bad for my mind, but
I clump them all together
all the bums
the same, and I always feel so ---
I keep walking and ignoring
because they aren't human
It reminds me of working at the Mcdonalds
You just become a machine,
there for the customer
there to beg for more sales
Just a machine
and so I gave a cigarette
and he said 'God Bless'
and I clump that together too
because they always say that
and how can someone like that believe
in God
because sometimes when I...

You're reading Thoreau
I'm reading Bukowski
Trials and tribulations chime
Let us sing
Don't you think it's funny
I'm listening to rap
while you play Tchaikovsky
Such a show stopper
Images of me lying
Naked on the floor waiting
For you to come
So sophisticated
aren't u?
I ignore the words you say
and just listen
Because your voice gives me a high
Your touch makes me jump
Even after one year
I can still hear your voice
and I remember driving
Brianna, remember that...

Water and Sand
I'd like to say I'm like water
Though that would be a lie
Mostly I have to admit
I am simply a passerby
I am the sand under the water
Beaten until it breaks
Soft and easy to manipulate
So very important
For sand is not naive
It sways relaxed
Water crashing above
It moves both stubborn and willing
Pain only softens the blows
Creates a smoothness
For other's to walk upon
And this is my role
I am sand
There to help others
To take what water gives
Create experience through experience
Though that would be a lie
Mostly I have to admit
I am simply a passerby
I am the sand under the water
Beaten until it breaks
Soft and easy to manipulate

No! Stop making noise!” With her back pressed heavily against the old wooden door she squeezed her eyes shut. “Just shut up!”
The crying though;
That awful crying wouldn’t stop.
“Why won’t you just admit it!
“Admit you’re ugly!” She screamed as her eyes flew open, and her fist slammed against the wood. “Admit how pitiful you are, and I’ll let you out!” Her voice was raw from crying as she slipped down against the door. Her fist was bruised, and her palm was littered with splinters. Eventually she sat up and stumbled around her room. Her bloodied hands...

Etchings
You remind me of a candle
The way the smoke slips from your lips
The way your flame flickers from side to side
The wick slowly burning
Turning black and ugly
As the wax slowly melts
I see the inside of you
The pool of unshaped lines
Nothing is defined in you
Little notches etched in smooth white
Children with their pocket knives
That's all your pain is equivalent to
Carvings of initials that melt with time
The way the smoke slips from your lips
The way your flame flickers from side to side
The wick slowly burning
Turning black and ugly
As the wax slowly melts
I see the inside of you

Words
I used to meld words together so fluently.
Adjectives and colorful images filled imaginary paper.
Now things just seem to slip away under my feet.

Reflections
Reflecting from the broken bottles
You can see my face
I am not myself, you see
I am another being
In the muddy waters of the lake
You can see my hand
For I am the ripples
The garbage that dies from poison
The city seems to dance with life
You can see the death in my shoes
I am the world you view
A world where the trash and grasses glue together
A child's collage of glitter and paper
The handprints on my feet
The clouds turn into bulls that charge
Ground vanishes in time
You can see my face
I am not myself, you see
I am another being
In the muddy waters of the lake
You can see my hand
For I am the ripples
The garbage that dies from poison
The city seems to dance with life

Happy again
I'm finally over the darkness
That covered my eyes
Bound me and gagged my thoughts
Hid my truth in a chest
Stuffed under my bed
I've crawled out
Lifted into the air
I feel light all around me
It hurt my eyes
But I can adjust
With all of these hands
Lifting me higher and higher
It's so easy to forget the pain
It's so easy
To finally be happy again
That covered my eyes
Bound me and gagged my thoughts
Hid my truth in a chest
Stuffed under my bed
I've crawled out
Lifted into the air
I feel light all around me

But I can adjust
With all of these hands
Lifting me higher and higher
It's so easy to forget the pain
It's so easy
To finally be happy again

Rush
The cargo trains are always so loud
In my small Iowa town
Rusted and tagged, just like those spikes
Things found walking along the tracks
Hand in hand
Balancing on metal
It was hot
The Summer humidity
So comfortable with that
Your own body an image
You always wore those shorts
That green bra too, when it was night
I wore sweat pants
An 'I Love Lucy' T-shirt
It was so big on me and held holes from wear
I wore it every night
It was my cousins
When the train came in, remember your face?
Let's play a game...
