Redemptive

It hit my chest,
Like the beat of a drum,
The water so cold,
It stole the breath from my lungs.

It crashed over my head,
And stole the sight of the sky,
It dragged me beneath,
And swallowed my cry.

The cold was piercing,
Its grip offered little relief,
So I closed my eyes,
And gave into my grief.

There was no saving me,
From this river of pain,
His silence said it all,
I was to blame.

So I sank beneath the surface,
Away from the air,
No longer able to float,
Or to trust anyone to care.

Its funny how sadness,
Drowns us all,
How every person,
Answers to sorrow's call.

And yet so few people,
Reach out to help,
When similar feelings,
We have all felt.

But this is a good thing,
No one can help me break free,
Because it’s my own sadness
That's drowning me.

And I know one day,
I'll break through the surface,
And find my place -
An undeniable purpose.

We are Drowning

We are drowning
In the sea of life.
Waves crashing all around,
Only our heads above water;
A hand raised high,
Reaching and searching for a solution.
Rescue!

Five fingers... grasping!

We are drowning in the waves of misery;
Waves of sadness;
Our emptiness.

We are drowning in the waves of fear;
Of superstitions;
Of greed;
In blood!

We are drowning in our wants and
    desires;
Our selfishness, our self-righteousness, gluttony.
Lust!

Lust for bigger.
Lust for flashier.
Lust for status.
Lust for more.
How does one get it?
By being a whore!

Four fingers...

Our leaders toss a lifeline,
They say it's the truth, we don't see
    the lies.
A heavy weight at the end of the rope,
Pulling us further under.
Blind faith!

We try to stay afloat
By treading material waters.
With weak egos unable to support;
Heavy egos weighing us down.
We collect more,
But gain less.

Three fingers...

The media - a brick;
Politicians - a concrete block;
Religion - a fucking lead weight!
Ever growing piles of shit
    and confusion.
In fetid waters we swim,
We can't swallow much more.

We think we are happy.
Pleasure becomes our pain.
We keep a stiff upper lip,
Thinking everything's not in vain.
    (And we hide our shame
         by placing blame)

Our curiosities will kill this cat.
We can't mind ourselves.
With our hands in others' pockets,
We push EACH OTHER down!

Two fingers...

The sharks gather and circle;
Closer and closer around.
As we drown in our illusions,
They wait patiently;
Are we food or are we found?

Not many breaths left.
Not much time to spare.
Can we save ourselves?

One finger...

He Couldn't Swim

Sinking to the bottom
A human anchor
Reaching new lows
Difficult to spot him
Under all that water
The ocean closed
Over his head
Oxygen is replaced
With salty liquid
He's almost dead
All he can taste
Is the Atlantic so frigid
Schools of fish
Studying him
As he stuggles for air
Oh how he wish
He was able to swim
Surrounded by water everywhere
Can't even yell
Only gargle
Air bubbles escapes his mouth
Aquatic hell
Eyes looking like marbles
As he sinks further south
Towards the ocean floor
Like a treasure chest
Decorating the sandy carpet
To be seen no more
Laid to rest
Sea creatures worship his carcass

Just as he wanted

He always wondered,
What it would be like,
To become water.

He always wanted,
For it all to just...
Flow away...

To the ocean he walked,
Sweet sand caressing his feet,
As he walked down the beach.
Slowly walking,
Gazing into the setting sun,
Mesmerized.

Little by little,
The water splashed up his legs,
To his hips,
To his stomach,
To his shoulders,
And yet,
He still stared at the horizon.

The waves pulled at his body,
As if to seduce his soul.
Little by little,
His head disappeared.

He held his breath as long as he could,
Until he finaly gave in,
Gasping and gurgling.
He was vainly struggling,
Until euphoria hit.

Now?
His soul flows with with the water,
To the setting sun,
Just as he wanted.

The drowning

People walk along these streets
Strutting and dog walking, walking
The white surf crashes, crashes beside
Beside them, this life is very attractive

Then the truth is out there
In the far off deep ocean
Where the drowning occurs
All the bodies swishing and
All the souls sitting
Watching the drowning

White and pink flowers
Beside coffee tables
And prams
The big rock unmoved
By the crashing
Crashing waves

And then lined up
Pram pusher
Twenty five and child fourteen months,
Runner seventeen years
Construction worker thirty five
Women in boots forty
Heading for the same spot

People walk along these streets
Strutting and dog walking, walking

You both did fantastic! There were no losers in this contest, but your poems captured the theme to perfection I think.
